In plenty of time for Penn State‘s appearance in the TicketCity Bowl, one of the postseason’s thirty-odd football circuses, the new president has declared his intention of changing the school’s image from Linebacker U. to Laboratory U.

There’s nothing like the bad public relations of a football-related atrocity to make higher education a university priority.

But it’s not going to happen, no matter how sincere the president’s intentions may be because the only way to truly de-emphasize football at a factory school like Penn State is to drop it. I doubt that can be done without changing the four basic conditions prevalent at Penn Ste (and other major football schools) that contributed to the climate that produced the scandal. The entrepreneurs of the educational-industrial complex would have to give up several major ideas…
