Her shapely stature cracked the air with each step from her southern cooked body. She was gorgeously tall and spoke with girlish shyness. Since young times Negroes and White men say something fine under her clothes. In Sutton, Mississippi most Negro women share physical similarities, but not with Ruby Granberry. Her nice physical collectibles caused Negro men to thirst and their women to drown in anger. However, when she came to church, women stared evil thinking toward her mightily. For when Ruby worshipped; she wore heels.
Many Negro residents of Sutton refused the move north when the getting was good for work. Believing their white God would send them good riches, they remained south defiantly; waiting. However their God kept quiet about helping them through the years. That’s when outside folks saw traces of religious craziness after help never came.
The Negro church folks would ‘shake and bake’ their bodies to obedience every Sunday. Good old Baptist gospel folks referred to it as. Luckily for Ruby she left long ago, albeit not to escape holy conversion by gospel crazies; no…she left in a hurry because her scent was being closed in upon.
On Fridays, 20 miles out at Bessie Milton’s junk joint, men thirsted for Ruby more than the cheap liquor. She was fine as can be to any man who can see with good eyes no less. Never minding however this was marriage country amongst black folks. Women like Ruby need ought to be married or receive the evil eye and run off by married women.
Notwithstanding Negro men were rascals in the small town of 2,000. Oft chasing young girls helping them find their bodies all the time. Sutton churchmen were no different. Their hands search young women’s bodies more than the collection plates, if you could figure that. Being smart however, hitched women knew, nothing raised a Negro churchman’s excitement more than a fine single young churchwoman; who’s figuring out her working parts.
Neverminding, one thing Mississippi folks get in a stir about is an insider who becomes an outsider. Negroes are just the same as White folks in this matter. The single, 20-years old, fair-skinned vixen was surely an outsider now being caught red-handed helping the pastor lose his sanctification. She must go — the good Negro folks of Sutton, Mississippi figured; more so the women than men obviously. Some gals even wishing her better dead than just gone up north. However the men were always blinded by her beauty, they did not want her to go.
That’s a main reason why the churchmen never paid attention to Ruby’s bad voice in the choir. Her perfectly carved figure clogged their already waxed ears anyhow. The only sounds they cared about was her physical one and she was loud no less. Desired like fine chocolate and fleeting as like cheap bubblegum to most men; she done always had a thing for pastors no less.
The new Negro minister done only had been there a few days already and his body burned like a pot belly stove with grits atop it. His thinking thoughts about Ruby are unable to be spoken to good folks. Let’s just say they were private and adult like. It is no secret around Sutton, a young single attractive church gal like Ruby drives Negro men wild.
The young pastor of God was crazy feeling about her. In fact, he done tasted her every Friday in the barn on the Wilson’s old plantation land since two months ago starting. When those Sutton Negro women done found out about her playfulness, they sought to get rid of her. Never minding however… Ruby long figured her young body makes men playful…
Just ask the deacons at that old Negro church in Sutton, Mississippi…in 1955.

Depressed men live in virtual darkness. Sad and dishearten these men may become emotionally isolated and disengaged. If depression deepens without medical intervention hopelessness may become evident. Haeffel, Abramson, Brazy, & Shah (2007) define hopelessness as being convinced the future holds nothing but bad outcomes and all efforts are futile. However, Snyder (2002) hope theory may help depressed men vision another alternative. Hope theory is associated with purposeful goals, strategic journey planning, and mental force. In other words this optimistic progression instigates ambitions, pathways, and psychological energy to goal achievement. It is my position that Snyder’s hope theory may help men battle depression and hopelessness.
Hope provides an underpinning to change thoughts and subsequent behaviors through achievement. The theoretical process is a triad of goal setting, journey thinking, and cognitive force. Changing hopelessness to hope first involves selecting positive goals. Hence encouraging fresh ambitions are alternatives to the negative goals often associated with depression (e.g., isolation, lack of effort, disengagement). Men whom set optimistic aims signify a preamble to change thoughts and subjective behaviors. Depression is as cognitive as it is a brain disorder; how we think influences our mental abilities.
The second strategy is cognitive thoughts about our trail. Perceived goals (e.g., good health, mental stability, employment) remain stagnant and stale without action. So, how do we get where we are going? How does one realistically consider the best route? Selecting the most desirable course may encounter trial and error. As a result there will be bumps in the road we suspect. However the resiliency to maintain an itinerary must be a prerequisite to success. Consequently, hope allows us to readjust our route to achieve our goals. However whatever course we choose we must not turn back; for the darkness is behind us.
Finally, our goals set, the path laid out, now the question remains “Do we believe?” Why should we trust in miracles? Hopelessness and depression is a significant predictor of suicide (O’Connor & Sheehy, 2000). Males are four times more likely to die from suicide than females (CDC 2004). Numerous obstacles, barriers, and obstructions filter the path of a change agent. Nevertheless how we talk to ourselves becomes most importance. Hope provides the fuel to the little engine that say “I think I can”. Do not turn back…tell yourself…“you can finish this.”
Depressed men live in cocooned hallow shells. Hope becomes one process to help supplement men in treating their depression. Yes, in fact depression is treatable. The cure of depression is effective 60 to 80% of the time (Stilson, 2006). Unfortunately men succeed in suicide more than women, in fact, 90% of people who committed suicide were depressed at the time (Stilson, 2006). Major depression is the psychiatric diagnosis most commonly associated with suicide (Rickelman & Houfek, 1995). Lifetime risk of suicide among patients with untreated depressive disorder is nearly 20% (Gotlib & Hammen, 2002). The hope theory suggests a process to stave off depression and hopelessness.
It is mistakenly understood; the proverbial quest for happiness appears pious. Thus millions seek this expression as virtuous as God’ understanding and compassionate. We yearn for this unsaid gift and scoff its escapable maneuvers from our clutches. Why is happiness so darn elusive? Mainly, because you are looking for it, in other words, you cannot see your nose because of your face.
Happiness is within, unknowable to some we were born with it, and unfortunately, this comprehension became severed by artificial substitutes of pleasure. Subsequently, the tons of external stimulants created the inability to just “Be’ in a state of happiness was lost. In fact, many believe happiness is manufactured as easily as a paper cup.
For instance, some recite, “If only things could fall in line, my state of being would change.” Sorry to say, there exists nothing outside you that will ever provide you happiness. To be clear, not a husband, employment, educational accomplishments, crack, children, or material gains will create a spiritual state of happiness.
Sadly, when we chase happiness, we demonstrate signs of faithless individuals. One that has abandoned any beliefs in God, in fact, these persons are control junkies. Not surprisingly, they talk big (Religiously, Spiritually) but are as frighten as a leaf. Without faith, their identities are infinite; they play roles of religious convictions, all the while praying at the altar of man. Do not be deceived, such individuals trust only in their control of situations and people. However, it is the illusion of “being in charge” that pains these individuals in their sleep and waking hours.

Happiness is a process of surrender. It says, “I AM.” Happiness does not quarrel with reality; it does not seek confirmation through artificial titles, accomplishments or acquisitions. These misguided spirits seeks happiness in “Person, Places or Things,” and ultimately never satisfied.
Hence, a problem is constantly in the way of happiness, (i.e., relationships, employment issues, and people’s ineptness) if only people would listen to me, they recite in anger. This is the sign of a child trapped in an adult egotistical mind.
The humility to release the ego that drives social comparison and control leads to inner discovery of reality. The reality that we were created with a state of happiness; as such we are connected to something unmolested by human’s intentions. As a result, our happiness is inside waiting for the acknowledgment that we are not in control, never was and never will be. Until then, all external happiness-seeking activities are a waste of tears and time.
